Sauna
vs
Hot Tub

Saunas and hot tubs are well known for their tension melting effects.

But which one is better?

Well, I generally try to avoid using the word “better”. After all, different people have different tastes and preferences.

With that said…

Sauna vs Hot Tub Benefits

Saunas and hot tubs have very similar benefits that include…

  • stress relief and total relaxation
  • enhanced blood circulation
  • improved detoxification processes
  • muscle and joint pain relief
However, the use of water and massage jets in a hot tub brings something extra to the table…

Hot Tub Benefits

Buoyancy and massage are two added benefits of using a hot tub vs a sauna.

Buoyancy. When you’re in a hot tub, buoyancy of the water reduces your body weight by about 90%. This feeling of weightlessness combined with heat really relaxes you, relieving any pressure on your joints and muscles in the process.

Massage. Your muscles and joints receive a continuous massage by jets that send a mix of warm water and air through nozzles.

How About Romance? Well, few things can add more to a romantic evening than a hot tub. There’s something about soaking in that warm, soothing water that makes you want to get a little closer.

Sauna vs Hot Tub for Detoxification – Advantage: Sauna

To quote Dr. Lawrence Wilson from his book Sauna Therapy:

“Detoxification can definitely occur with hot tubs and hot baths. One drawback to their repeated use is that chemical toxins are absorbed from the water itself and perhaps from the chemicals used to purify the water.”

He went on to say that you absorb chlorine and perhaps hundreds of other volatile organic chemicals present in tap water supplies. Also, the humidity in hot tubs and steam rooms supports the growth of many infection-causing bacteria.

This doesn’t mean stay away from hot tubs. They do carry some great benefits. But I think the information above does support the idea that saunas offer an edge as far as detoxification is concerned.

In conclusion…

Saunas and hot tubs both have such wonderful benefits. If you’re not doing so already, why not start to incorporate both of these wonderful natural healing modalities into your life?
