A steam shower generator is what puts the “steam” in your shower.
Choosing the right model can be a challenge.
In addition to selling ready-made steam shower enclosures, many dealers also sell generators separately for people who want to build their own steam shower.
They'll provide assistance for choosing the right generator for your enclosure.
Here are some buying tips...
Choosing a Steam Shower Generator
Choosing the correct sized generator is the most important thing to do if you want a steam shower that works right.
First of all, generators are rated by their output capacity measured in cubic feet.
The first step is to measure the cubic feet of the enclosure. You can do this by multiplying the height by the width and the length of the enclosure.
For example, if you have a steam shower measuring 2 feet wide, 8 feet long, and 8 feet high, the enclosure is 128 cubic feet.
In that case, you can use a generator rated at about 120 to 130 cubic feet - if the walls and ceilings are covered in ceramic tile that is.
If the walls and ceilings are glass or stone material however, the generator should be rated at around 250 cubic feet. The reason a larger generator would be needed is because glass and stone will absorb more of the heat from the enclosure than a material like ceramic tile.
Cost Factors
Size is a big factor in the price of a generator. Larger generators tend to be more expensive, but seller prices will vary for units of equal size.
The price of a steam generator is also affected by...
the quality of the machinery
the amount of aftermarket service offered
added features
Installation
Once you select the proper generator, you have to decide on an installation location. The generator should ideally be installed in a low traffic area.
Most steam generators can be installed up to 20 to 40 feet away from the shower enclosure.
Besides being in an insulated spot, it also needs access to electricity and water, and there should also be a drain close by.
