Wood Sauna Heater

Many purists would argue that a wood sauna heater is a necessity if you want a truly genuine sauna experience.

A wood heater, also known as a sauna wood stove (or kiuas, a Finnish word for 'sauna stove'), may be ideal if your sauna is (or will be) located…

• outdoors
• in a remote location
• within a cabin
• in an area with unreliable electrical service
• in the country where firewood is available

Many people do favor a wood burning sauna stove no matter where they live because they enjoy the scent from the wood and the view of the flames as they take a sauna.

If you consider choosing a wood heater, it’s helpful if firewood is inexpensive and plentiful.

Wood sauna heaters are combustion chambers with controlled air flow. The amount of air flow determines how fast the wood burns – lower air flow causes the wood to burn slower.

Controlling the airflow also controls the temperature to a certain extent, but there's no way to set a wood heater to a certain temperature like an electric heater.

Some Pros and Cons

Wood heaters are a good choice for outdoor saunas or areas where electricity is unreliable or not available.

For many, there’s nothing like the pleasurable aroma of the burning wood, and being able to watch the flames while taking your sauna also enhances the whole experience.

The problem (or should I say potential problem) with a wood heater is that you must have a supply of wood ready when you want to use your sauna.

You can gather the wood yourself if it’s available, but you will also need to cut it. Alternatively, you can buy wood that has already been cut.

If you’re really considering a wood sauna heater, make sure you know the local building codes. You’ll need to make sure that wood burning stoves are allowed, and if so what kind of restrictions are in place.
